Dr. Michael D. Joner has worked as the director of the BYU West Mountain Observatory since it opened in the fall of 1981. He did both undergraduate and graduate study at BYU and believes he was just in the right place at the right time when the Resident Astronomer position was posted as the observatory was being built. After working 20 years as Resident Astronomer, he accepted an appointment as Associate Research Professor and was then promoted to Research Professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy. Dr. Joner has worked in photometric astronomy and time series observational research for much of his career. He will present some of the observational research projects that have been carried out at the BYU West Mountain Observatory over the past few years that have led to many publications in diverse areas of research that include planetary science, exoplanet discoveries, variable white dwarfs, regular pulsating variable stars, active galaxies, and large scale structure studies.
