Supernova 2014G

My first supernova discovery, SN 2014G in galaxy NGC 3448. Both images are 15 second exposures taken with a Paramount ME, C-14 telescope operating at f/5.5 & ST-10XME camera binned 3x3. FOV is about 18 x 26 arc minutes. Software used: TheSky6, CCDSoft & Orchestrate.

Pre-discovery image was taken 2014 January 06. Discovery image taken on 2014 January 14 at 07:36:02 UT when a nearly full Moon brightened the sky.

NGC 3448 is about 78 million light years away in the direction of the constellation Ursa Major. Put another way, light from the explosion just reaching Earth started its journey some 78 million years ago when dinosaurs roamed the Earth.

SN 2014G is far to faint to be seen with the naked eye. A fairly large telescope must be used. The "G" at the end of SN 2014G indicates it is the 7th supernova discovered in 2014.
